Lighting and Staging with Projection
When using projection in your production, there are several logistical factors to consider. Whether you're opting for front or rear projection, or an LED video wall, these choices will influence how you light and stage your performance. With front projection, a key challenge is managing the amount of front light that spills onto your projected surface. Any front-facing light will reflect off the stage floor and onto the projection, potentially washing it out.
To mitigate this, careful planning is needed—this might include adjusting your blocking or concentrating the majority of action downstage to avoid unwanted light spill. One potential solution is using a brighter projector, though this can come with additional costs. Another solution is to use more side and overhead light, however this may not light your performer in the perfered way.
We strongly recommend consulting with your Lighting Designer before rehearsals begin to discuss the best approach for integrating projection effectively. A skilled lighting designer can offer valuable insights and solutions to ensure the desired results, making this an essential conversation to have early in the process.
