Our Creative Solutions

Founded by Melbourne based scenic and digital artist David Horne, StageScape Projections fills a crucial gap in the world of digital theatre design. Recognising a growing trend in the use of projection and LED Video walls as cost-effective, versatile alternatives to traditional sets, David saw the need for projection solutions specifically tailored to theatre. Unlike generic digital content or AI-generated visuals, StageScape Projections provides backdrops that are meticulously designed with a cohesive aesthetic to serve the artistic and technical needs of each production.

What sets StageScape Projections apart is our dedication to blending artistry with technical precision to create dynamic and flexible scenes. Each design incorporates theatrical lighting, with carefully crafted lighting states that serve the specifc needs of the scene.

Our dynamic scenic transitions take inspiration from traditional theatrical scene changes, evoking the awe and magic of classic scenic transformations.

Every projection is meticulously crafted by David Horne, whose extensive professional experience ensures that each design meets the highest artistic standards.

Scenic Magic Without the Build - Just Project.

How It Started

StageScape Projections was born out of creativity and resilience during Melbourne's Covid lockdowns in 2020 and 2021. With theatres closed, David turned to Cinema 4D, a 3D modelling program, to channel his passion for scenic design. Knowing virtually nothing about the program initially, he taught himself to use the program, believing it would be a great way to communicate Set Design movement and lighting concepts. David knew the best way to master new software was by diving into a meaningful project. He chose to create a set design concept for The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. With much of the design already imagined, it was simply a matter of bringing it to life visually within the software. Challenges demanded persistence, turning every problem into a learning opportunity.

This hands-on approach revealed the limitless potential of digital stage design, transforming a simple exercise into the concept video you see below:

Inspired by conversations with industry peers about the potential of 3D animations for scenic projections, David used Cinema 4D to create another test project: the iconic ballroom scene from Beauty and the Beast. The overwhelmingly positive response to this experiment led to the founding of StageScape Projections, providing a global resource for theatre companies seeking professional-quality projection designs.

  • Designing the Scene

Creating digital backdrops for theatre productions is both a creative and highly technical process. It all begins with designing each scene using the professional 3D rendering program Cinema 4D. This software allows us to build in a virtual 3D space where we can experiment and adjust different camera angles to find the most visually striking compositions. Every object is textured to give it depth and realism, and then meticulously lit to create the perfect atmosphere.

  • A Theatrical Approach to Visuals

Our visual aesthetic isn’t focused on strict realism but embraces a theatrical approach. We light scenes as if they were sets on a stage, sometimes allowing light sources to come from unexpected directions. If it enhances the overall mood and visual impact, we say—why not? Theatrical storytelling thrives on creative choices that amplify drama and atmosphere.

  • Incorporating Classic Stage Techniques

To achieve a truly theatrical look, we incorporate classic stage techniques within the digital scene. These include forced perspective, cycloramas, flats, and theatrical lighting effects featuring a heavy use of theatrical gobos. By simulating a traditional stage environment, we create digital backdrops that seamlessly blend with on-stage performances. For animated scenes, we use the production music as our guide, ensuring that visual elements are perfectly timed to the soundtrack, complementing the music in timing, aesthetic, and tone.

  • Rendering and Final Touches

Once the design is finalised, the rendering process begins. Depending on the complexity of the scene, this can take anywhere from several hours to several weeks. It’s a process that requires plenty of patience and dedication. After rendering is complete, we enhance the visuals with post-production effects in Adobe After Effects, adding LUX effects, colour corrections, and other visual flourishes for that extra touch of magic. Finally each scene is tested alongside the production’s soundtrack to ensure perfect synchronisation.

Cinema 4D allows us to build in a virtual 3D space where we can experiment and adjust different camera angles to find the most visually striking compositions.

Theatrical Lighting within the Design

Each design undergoes meticulous lighting with a theatrical approach to optimize its impact within the stage setting. Unlike images sourced from generic platforms like Google or AI, our designs are imbued with the nuanced ambiance and dynamism that only theatrical lighting can provide. Leveraging David's experience in stage lighting, each scene is illuminated to seamlessly complement the foreground performance.

Furthermore, in addition to the primary lighting configuration, StageScape Projections offers supplementary images featuring various lighting states with every purchase. This affords you unparalleled control over the background lighting, empowering you to curate the mood and ambiance in ways otherwise unattainable.

Each scene comes with a minimum of five alternates, offering a variety of different moods and times of day. This gives you complete control to change the background to reflect the passing of time or to compliment any mood changes within the scene.
