Five lighting states give directors complete scenic control across one of The Wizard of Oz's most character-rich scenes.
The primary state fills the scene with god rays pouring through the forest canopy, casting dappled light across the cottage, the Yellow Brick Road and the overgrown woodpile. It is the scene at its most welcoming and visually rich, ideal for the initial reveal and the moments of discovery that follow.
A dedicated state was designed for the Wicked Witch's arrival. The warmth drains from the scene, replaced by cold, dark tones and harsh shadows that transform a beautiful woodland setting into something threatening and foreboding. The contrast of the white birch trunks against the darkened forest becomes particularly stark, reinforcing the Witch's power without a single spoken word.
Two states were created specifically for "If I Only Had a Heart." The first softens the scene into a warm purple and orange palette, giving the Tin Man his own atmospheric moment. The second, designed for the song's bridge, dims slightly and introduces pink gobos for a subtle emotional shift.
A fifth alternate daytime state leans into deeper greens and teals, providing additional scenic variety wherever a director needs it.
