Where the first effect brings the characters into the forest, this one carries them back out. As “If I Only Had the Nerve” draws to a close, the camera turns gently back to align with the yellow brick road, then pulls slowly backward as the characters reprise “We’re Off to See the Wizard,” retreating further into the world of Oz as they go. It’s the perfect bookend to the scene, arriving along the road and leaving the same way, and a clear reminder that these characters are travelling through a living world rather than standing in front of a fixed picture.

Timed to land with the reprise, the effect gives the number a genuine sense of departure and momentum, while widening the view to show more of Oz beyond the scene itself. A quietly beautiful close to the scene, built to use projection for something a static set never could.
