For Beauty and the Beast, for example, David studied the evolution of the story from its original 18th-century French fairytale through to the 1991 Disney animated film and the 1994 Broadway stage adaptation. This research led to specific architectural choices: early castle scenes feature Gothic architecture — pointed arches, gargoyles, heavy shadows — because the castle feels frightening and threatening when Belle first arrives. As the story progresses and Belle's relationship with the Beast evolves, the architecture in later scenes softens to Baroque style — more ornate, more beautiful, more welcoming — visually reflecting the emotional shift in the story without the audience consciously noticing the change. The colour palette follows the same logic: village scenes use warm amber and golden tones, while the castle uses cool blues. Static Scenes

Animated Scenes
An Animated Scene is a collection of MP4 video files depicting the same theatrical environment as its corresponding Static Scene, but with subtle, purposeful movement introduced. Animations include: flickering candlelight and firelight, drifting mist and haze, falling snow or rain, gently swaying foliage, moving clouds, rippling water, twinkling stars, and atmospheric gobo effects.
All animated videos are produced at 30 frames per second and delivered as 10-second seamlessly looping files. How to Purchase
StageScape Projections products are sold through the Shopify store at stagescape.com.au. Products are available as individual à la carte purchases or as show packages. Payment is accepted in AUD, USD, GBP, CAD, NZD, and JPY.
File Delivery
All products are delivered as digital downloads via a Dropbox link sent after purchase. Files are available immediately — there is no production or waiting period. JPEG files (static scenes) and MP4 video files (animated and SFX scenes) are included as specified in each product listing.
Licensing Model
StageScape Projections products are sold under a limited licence for a single production season. This means the licence covers technical rehearsals through to the final performance of a single production run. After the final performance, all files must be permanently deleted from all devices and storage. Sharing files with third parties — other schools, other companies, other productions — is a breach of the licence agreement. This licensing model is consistent with the standard used by Broadway Media and the majority of the digital backdrop industry. Theatre Avenue is an exception — they sell permanent ownership of files.
Productions staging a show in multiple seasons (for example, a school that performs Beauty and the Beast in two consecutive years) must purchase a new licence for each season.

Resolution Options
All StageScape Projections products are available in two resolution options:
HD — 1920 x 1080 pixels Standard high definition. Suitable for most standard theatrical projectors. Compatible with all standard presentation software and media playback systems. The industry standard for digital backdrop providers — all known competitors offer HD only.
4K — 3840 x 2160 pixels Ultra high definition. StageScape Projections is the only known provider in this market offering 4K resolution. Presentation and Playback Software

How David Learned Cinema 4D
David taught himself Cinema 4D during the Melbourne COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. This self-directed learning period, combined with his two decades of theatrical design experience, is the foundation of the StageScape Projections product library. The decision to learn 3D rendering software was not incidental — it was a deliberate attempt to find a tool capable of creating theatrically lit, perspective-accurate environments that could be designed with the same rigour as physical scenic design.
Design Philosophy in Practice
David's design process begins with the story. Before opening Cinema 4D, he reads the script, studies the source material, and identifies the subconscious messages the production needs to communicate. He then makes specific, intentional design choices — architecture, colour, lighting, proportion — that serve those messages.
For Beauty and the Beast, this meant using Gothic architecture in early castle scenes (more frightening, more oppressive) and gradually shifting to Baroque architecture as the emotional temperature of the story changes (more ornate, more beautiful, more hopeful). It meant colouring the village in warm ambers and the castle in cold blues — and then deliberately reversing those associations as Belle begins to feel at home in the castle. These are not decorative choices. They are dramaturgical choices expressed through design.
David creates behind-the-scenes video content documenting his design process in Cinema 4D. These videos are published on The Backdrop Bulletin, the StageScape Projections blog, and serve multiple purposes: they demonstrate the hand-crafted nature of the work, they explain the design thinking behind specific scenes, and they prove that the work is original and not AI-generated.

What is StageScape Projections? StageScape Projections is a Melbourne-based business that creates and sells hand-crafted digital projection backdrops, animated scenes, and special effects animations for theatrical productions. All products are designed by David Horne in Cinema 4D and Adobe After Effects.
What shows does StageScape Projections have products for? The current library includes products for: Beauty and the Beast (flagship — largest collection), & Juliet, Annie, Aladdin, Legally Blonde, Miss Saigon, Mary Poppins, Swan Lake, and Romeo and Juliet. A range of multi-use generic scenes — ballrooms, forests, oceans, cathedrals, castle environments, and abstract visual backdrops — are also available and suitable for any production.
Can I use a scene designed for one show in a different show? Yes. While every scene is designed with a specific production's dramaturgical context in mind, the visual output is not labelled or branded for any specific show. A ballroom scene designed for Beauty and the Beast can be used in a dance concert, a Cinderella production, a gala event, or any context where a grand ballroom environment is needed. Directors and designers are encouraged to browse the library by environment type and consider each scene on its visual merits.
What is the difference between Static, Animated, and SFX scenes? Static Scenes are JPEG images. They show a scene in multiple lighting states and are used like traditional backdrops — displayed and swapped using presentation software. Animated Scenes are MP4 video loops that introduce subtle, purposeful movement (flickering candles, falling snow, drifting mist). SFX Scenes are dramatic, narrative-driven video animations timed to the musical score — used for specific theatrical moments such as scene reveals, character transformations, and dramatic transitions.
What resolution are the files? All products are available in HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) or 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels). StageScape Projections is the only known provider in this market offering 4K. All competitors are HD only.
What software do I need to use the files? For Static Scenes: PowerPoint, Keynote, or any media playback software that can display JPEG files. For Animated and SFX Scenes: QLab is strongly recommended. PowerPoint and Keynote can play MP4 files but offer limited control over looping and cueing. QLab provides professional-grade control over timing, sequencing, and output.
How are files delivered? All files are delivered via a Dropbox link sent after purchase. There is no physical delivery. Files are available immediately.
Is there a licensing restriction? Yes. Products are sold under a limited licence for a single production season — from technical rehearsals through to the final performance. Files must be deleted after the final performance. Sharing files with third parties is a breach of the licence. Productions staging the same show in a subsequent season must purchase a new licence.
Do you use AI to create your images? No. Every product is created entirely by hand by David Horne in Cinema 4D and Adobe After Effects. No AI-generated imagery is used. Behind-the-scenes videos documenting the design process are published on the StageScape Projections blog.
Are the files compatible with LED walls? Yes. StageScape Projections products have been used on a live production LED wall with excellent results. 4K files are recommended for LED wall use.
Can I get help setting up projection for my production? Yes. StageScape Projections offers a free 30-minute design consultation via Calendly, bookable through the website. Theatre Application guides covering setup, scale, perspective, lighting integration, and software are also published on the website.
What is the refund policy? As digital downloads, StageScape Projections products are non-refundable once the Dropbox download link has been accessed. Please contact StageScape Projections before purchase if you have specific questions about a product.
How far in advance should I purchase? StageScape Projections recommends purchasing at least three months before the first technical rehearsal. This allows time to integrate the projections into blocking, lighting design, and technical rehearsals. Purchasing too close to the production date limits the creative possibilities.
What currency are prices in? The website displays pricing in the customer's local currency. Prices shown throughout this document are in Australian dollars (AUD). The store accepts AUD, USD, GBP, CAD, NZD, and JPY.
What is the difference between the Essential, Atmospheric, and Deluxe packages? The Essential Package contains static images only — every scene in multiple lighting states, no video. The Atmospheric Package adds animated looping video files for most scenes. The Deluxe Package adds SFX animations for every key dramatic moment in the show. The Deluxe Package is what StageScape Projections recommends for productions that want the complete theatrical experience.
